• Our aim

The "constructing a well" project should help alleviate the acute lack of clean drinking water. Therefore NEEED with the help of donations has dug wells for villages and one for the high school.

  • Problems

The northern part of Burkina Faso to which the province YATENGA belongs, is part of the so called SAHEL - zone, the transition reagion to SAHARA desert. Long drought periods and the spreading of the desert are characteristical for this region, therefore is dominated by acute water shortage. The only solution to this problem is to dig wells. But earth's crust containing water lies between 40 - 70 meters deep that the construction of a well is connected to high costs and great effort.

  •  The results
  •

In the following villages NEEED built a well:

TONGMENE - a well was constructed to serve the entire village and to save women and girls the daily long way to the next water hole
OUIGHUIYA - the well of the girls high school. The well is 76 meters deep. Pictures can be viewed here. We had to dig twice to reach the water.

  • Who finances the project and how high are the costs

The well construction project os financed by sponsors from the U.S.A (Friends of Burkina). The costs for each well amounted to approx. € 10,000.

  • Perspectives

At the moment we haven't planned to build further wells as we do not have the money. We would like to build another three wells in villages in order for them to have clean drinking water. The required sum approx. is € 30,000.
